VOV.VN - The national U22 team finished in third position after defeating their Malaysian rivals 2-1 on September 10 at the CFA Team China International Friendly Competition Changsha 2024 taking place in Hunan province.

In their final match of the competition, Vietnam’s U22s led by head coach Dinh Hong Vinh applied plenty of pressure to the Malaysian team.

Defender Hieu Minh opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and striker Dinh Bac doubled the lead just four minutes later.

Goalkeeper Nguyen Tuan then received a red card after a foul inside the box, resulting in a penalty which the Malaysian player was able to dispatch to reduce the deficit to 2-1 before the first half ended.

The 10-member Vietnamese team defended valiantly to keep the score at 2-1 until the end of the game. This comes after the Vietnam lost to the hosts China 2-1 and Uzbekistan 2-0. With their only win coming against Malaysia, Vietnam ranked third in the overall table.

The championship title ultimately went to the U22 players from Uzbekistan.

The purpose of the tournament is to evaluate and review each of the players’ quality, as well as preparing for future tournaments involving the U22s and national team, according to head coach Dinh Hong Vinh.

Moving forward, Vietnam is set to take part in the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup in September, 2025, as well as the 33rd SEA Games in December, 2025.
