Vietnam suffers first failure at Chess Olympiad 2024

VOV.VN - The Vietnamese team suffered their first defeat at the 2024 Chess Olympiad on the early morning of September 19 as Banh Gia Huy failed to beat his Iranian rival in the seventh round of the competition in Hungary.

According, Huy (Elo 2,425) was defeated by Idani Pouya of Iran (Elo 2,599), thereby ending the Vietnamese team’s unbeaten streak.

Meanwhile, Grandmaster Le Quang Liem (Elo 2,741) was held to a draw with Maghsoodloo Parham (Elo 2,723) after 42 moves. Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (Elo 2,633) and Le Tuan Minh (Elo2,564) also drew with Tabatabaei Amin (Elo 2,714) after 30 moves and Daneshvar Bardiya (Elo 2,598) after 83 moves, respectively.

With five wins, one draw, and one loss, the Vietnamese men's team dropped to ninth place in the overall table with 11 points.

In the ninth round, which is scheduled to take place on September 20, the Vietnamese team will face off against opponents from Norway.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese women's chess team came in 17th thanks to their victory over the Czech Republic. They will play now take on Malaysia in the next round of the tournament.
