VOV.VN - The Cầu ngư Festival, which fisherman come to pray for a good harvest of fish, was held on February 17, the 20th day of the first lunar month, in Thanh Khe district in the central coastal city of Da Nang.
The Cầu ngư Festival is one of several traditional festivals held in the central region which derives from the Nam Hải (Whale Saint) worshipping custom.
The annual event takes place on the 20th day of the first lunar month with many attending hoping for a bumper haul of fish and safe voyages in the new year.
The festival plays an important part in the spiritual life of people who earn a living at sea.
In 2016, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recognises the festival as a part of the national intangible cultural heritage.
The festival features a wide variety of rituals, including a procession of the god of the sea which is carried by local fishermen as a prelude for the festival in Da Nang.
Local authorities offer incense before the festival begins.
The occasion marks the end of the Lunar New Year festival among fishermen, meaning that they will set sail on new fishing trips afterwards.
Many joyful cultural activities are also held as part of the event, such as folk singing and traditional games.
The festival draws plenty of attention from both local people and tourists.
