VOV.VN - Nguyen Thuy Linh, Vietnam's number one badminton player, extended her impressive run at the 2025 World Badminton Championships in Paris with a second-round win over Scottish rival Kirsty Gilmour in the women’s singles, securing her place in the Round of 16.
The victory was particularly notable as Linh, the last Vietnamese player left in the tournament, avenged her previous defeat to Gilmour in the Round of 16 at the 2024 Indonesia Open. Trailing 13-12 in the first set, she surged ahead with five straight points to lead 17-13 before closing it out 21-17.
The second set was tighter, with Linh holding match point at 20-19 but missing the chance as her opponent briefly turned the score to 21-20. Showing composure, the 28-year-old reeled off three points in a row to secure a 23-21 win, sealing the match in straight sets. Overall, she won 44 of 82 points for a 54% success rate.
This is the second time Linh has reached the third round of the World Championships, following her first achievement in Nanjing, China, in 2018. She will next face fourth seed Chen Yufei of China, a former world No.1 and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist.
Meanwhile, all other Vietnamese players exited in the earlier rounds, leaving Linh as the nation’s sole representative and greatest hope at this year’s world championship.
