VOV.VN - Head coach Kim Sang Sik announced a 30-man Vietnam squad on November 18 ahead of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024, with the competition set to begin in December.

The list witnessed the absence of three key players, including striker Nguyen Cong Phuong, center-back Que Ngoc Hai, and aging midfielder Do Hung Dung, all of whom have been in poor form in recent matches.

Several outstanding faces made their return to the national team, including goalkeepers Dang Van Lam and Nguyen Dinh Trieu, defenders Do Duy Manh and Bui Tien Dung, midfielders Nguyen Hai Long and Phan Van Duc, and striker Pham Tuan Hai.

Moreover, the Vietnamese squad featured several popular names who are crucial to the team in both defence and attack, namely midfielders Nguyen Quang Hai, Phan Van Duc, Nguyen Hoang Duc, and Khuat Van Khang; defenders Vu Van Thanh, Ho Tan Tai, and Bui Hoang Viet Anh; and striker Nguyen Tien Linh.

Two newcomers, midfielders Tran Bao Toan and Doan Ngoc Tan, were also called up by the Korean coach.

The Vietnamese squad will take part in a training camp in the Republic of Korea from November 21 to December 3 and the Korean coach will name a squad of 23 players before their opening match against Laos on December 9.

The 2024 ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup represents the 15th edition of the event and will be held from December 8 to January 5, 2025. Vietnam are in Group B and will play against Laos, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Myanmar on December 9, December 15, December 18, and December 21, respectively.

Held biennially, ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup is the region’s largest football event. Since its inception back in 1996, the competition, which features ASEAN national teams, has drawn plenty of attention from regional football fans.

The tournament became an official FIFA event back in 2016. Only four teams have won the title in 14 editions, with defending champions Thailand lifting the cup seven times, Singapore with four wins, Vietnam with two wins, and Malaysia with one.
