VOV.VN - Ka Don church in the Central Highland province of Lam Dong attracts a wide range of visitors, including tourists, architects, researchers, and nature lovers, for it is not just a religious building but a symbol of harmony between contemporary architecture and indigenous culture.
Ka Don church, located in Krang Go 2 village, 40km from downtown Da Lat, is primarily built from locally sourced pine wood, combined with glass, steel, and red tile roofing.
As no paint or ornate decorations are used, the natural texture and colour of the wood are preserved, showcasing raw beauty and timeless elegance.
This church, inauguraed in 2014, has won many architectural awards such as the European Prize for Sacred Architecture in 2011, and the International Prize for Sacred Architecture in 2016.
Its design draws from the stilt houses of the Churu ethnic group, indigenous to the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
Pine wood is used in every interior structure of the church, ranging from walls, ceilings, partitions to tables and chairs.
The four sides of the church are made of pine wood, whilst the roof is covered with red clay tiles, thereby giving it a rustic and unique look.
With a low, wide-spanning roof, the church appears to blend into the forest landscape, offering a warm, welcoming presence.
The space inside the church is simply decorated, with light pouring in from all four sides, making people feel comfortable.
Gongs are the main musical instruments which are used by the church for community events, gatherings, and religious activities.
The wall and ceiling system creates a sacred, spacious, and intimate space.
The peaceful and rustic space close to nature is also a factor in attracting many families.
Pham Thuy Linh, a tourist from Nha Trang, shares that she feels completely at ease and delighted during her visit to the church, describing it as an open, rustic, and peaceful space that offers a deep sense of comfort.
