VOV.VN - Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi is hosting a special exhibition called “Vertical Landscape”, showcasing works by Vietnamese and international photographers to explore the world through vertical compositions.
The exhibition, jointly organised by the Photo Hanoi 2025 photography biennale and the EU Delegation to Vietnam, offers a fresh perspective on landscapes, presenting them vertically and inviting viewers to experience space in a different, more emotional way.
The exhibition transforms the traditional view of landscapes into a dialogue between nature and humans in the digital age. By employing a vertical format, closely associated with smartphone screens, the display challenges conventional limits while reflecting how modern life shapes the way we engage with the world.
Each photograph captures a slice of nature that feels both intimate and distant, serene yet thought-provoking, highlighting the shrinking of natural spaces amid rapid urbanisation.
The modern installation blends photography with the urban scenery around Hoan Kiem Lake.
Visitors are encouraged to shift their focus from panoramic views to depth and detail, a change that disrupts the usual understanding of landscape photography.
Whereas horizontal compositions evoke calm, vertical compositions create a sense of intensity and constraint, prompting reflection on how people perceive space beyond traditional horizontal boundaries.
The exhibition uses illuminated vertical light boxes that reflect on the lake’s surface, creating a luminous corridor that merges art with the cityscape.
These light boxes also evoke smartphone screens, emphasising how technology mediates human connection with nature, both linking and distancing people from it.
The display structures are more than mere supports; they serve as metaphors for the evolving way humans approach and appreciate the natural world.
Visitors observe the vertical images attentively, experiencing the depth and overwhelming presence created by the compositions. International guests remark that the vertical format makes the landscapes feel as if they are falling toward them, rather than just being observed.
“Vertical Landscape” goes beyond a mere display, as it fosters dialogue between artists and audiences on contemporary ways of seeing the world.
Curated by Ly Hoang Long and Mai Nguyen Anh and featuring photographic works by artists from EU member states and from Europe in general, the exhibition is open from November 7 to 23.
The exhibition highlights cultural exchanges between international artists and Vietnamese audiences, establishing “Vertical Landscapes” as a shared visual language bridging different perspectives and experiences.
