German President's wife explores Vietnamese culture through water puppetry

VOV.VN - Elke Büdenbender, the wife of the German President, joined with Phan Thi Thanh Tam, the wife of President Vo Van Thuong, to watch a traditional water puppet show held on January 23 in Hanoi as part of her ongoing official visit to Vietnam.
The two first ladies come together to view a show at the Thang Long Water Puppet Theater which was established in 1969 and is one of the most famous water puppetry performance venues in the nation.
Elke Büdenbender, the wife of the German President, visits the behind-the-scenes area and chats with artists to gain a deeper understanding of both the art and their work. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife arrived on the morning of January 23 in Hanoi to mark the start of their two-day state visit to the nation at the invitation of President Thuong and his wife.
The Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre present special gifts to the two first ladies as part of their visit to the theatre. Water puppetry is a Vietnamese tradition that dates back as far as the 11th century when it originated in the villages of the Red River Delta area of northern Vietnam. Water puppet shows feature scenes reflecting rural landscapes, bamboo trees, and traditional activities such as fishing and rice cultivation.
The wives of the Vietnamese and German Presidents pose together for a photo with artists at the theatre. Vietnam and Germany first established diplomatic relations back in 1975 before lifting ties to that of a strategic partnership in 2011. Indeed, 2024 represents a pivotal year towards the 50th founding anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties ahead in 2025.
