VOV.VN - The traditional bull fighting festival in Dien Bien Dong district of Dien Bien province, Northern Vietnam, is a unique cultural event that attracts a large number of locals and tourists during the Lunar New Year.
Held annually on the second day of the Lunar New Year, this year's festival is taking place from January 30 to February 1( or from the second to the fourth day of the Year of the Snake) at the central stadium of Dien Bien Dong district.
This year’s competition features 74 bulls from various communes in the district and neighbouring areas, drawing tens of thousands of spectators.
On the opening day, after a brief ceremony, the bulls enter thrilling matches, showcasing their strength and skills.
Fighting bulls should have large, sturdy horns, a thick neck, and a powerful head to withstand impacts.
Bulls that are too young (under 3 years) may lack strength, while older bulls (over 7 years) may lose agility.
In bull fighting, bulls should be naturally aggressive and willing to engage in combat without fear.
Bulls with previous competition experience have an advantage as they are more familiar with the competitive environment.
Owners should spend time caring for and training the bull to ensure obedience and optimal performance during the competition.
Beyond providing entertainment, the festival is also an opportunity for bull owners to connect, share farming experiences, and contribute to improving local knowledge and economic development.
The traditional bull fighting festival in Dien Bien Dong is not just a recreational event but also a cultural beauty that reflects the solidarity and identity of ethnic communities in the highlands.
