VOV.VN - A large team of 143 Vietnamese chess players are currently vying for the championship titles at the 23rd ASEAN+ Age-Group Championships taking place in Penang, Malaysia, from July 1 - 10.
Among the hopefuls is Dinh Nho Kiet, who topped the rapid chess rankings in the Boys U16 category at the 2024 Asian Youth Chess Championship. He is expected to be a strong contender at this year’s competition.
Also representing Vietnam is Vu Hao Nhien, a rising star in the global chess scene and one of the youngest Vietnamese players to earn a FIDE rating. At just 16 years old, he holds an international rating of 1473, highlighting his growing potential on the world stage.
Other promising talents include Nguyen Thien Ngan, Bui Thi Ngoc Chi, and Le Nhat Minh, all of whom are anticipated to gain valuable experience and possibly bring home strong results.
The tournament features over 300 players from 18 countries and territories, competing across age groups from U6 to U20 in standard chess, rapid chess, and blitz chess.
The championship is expected to help athletes to sharpen their skills and prepare for the upcoming tournaments, including the 33rd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 33) due to be held in Thailand later this year.
