Vietnam faces relegation risk in Davis Cup Group III after loss to Singapore

VOV.VN - Vietnam’s national tennis team suffered a 0–3 defeat to Singapore in the third round of Group A at the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group III, putting the country at risk of relegation to Group IV.
Contrary to earlier expectations, the consolation win in the doubles match against Saudi Arabia did not boost Vietnam’s morale in the decisive match to secure their place in Group III.
A win over Singapore would have secured Group III status for another year, but the loss now forces Vietnam into a relegation play-off against the fourth-placed team from Group B.
In the opening singles match, Pham La Hoang Anhwas defeated 3–6, 4–6 by Singapore’s Bill Chan. In the second singles match, Vu Ha Minh Duc put up a valiant fight against Shaheed Alam, taking the first set 6–4 before narrowly losing the second in a tiebreak. Fatigue took its toll in the third set, in which he lost 2–6, sealing the overall loss for Vietnam.
Losing both singles matches meant that the doubles game between Dinh Viet Tuan Minh and Nguyen Minh Phat against Jimenez and Yasin was merely procedural. Even victory would only have served as consolation.Despite a spirited performance that pushed the match into the early hours of July 18, Vietnam eventually lost in three sets: 4–6, 6–3, 3–6.
This marks the first time Singapore has defeated Vietnam in all three matches (two singles and one doubles) in Davis Cup history. The result ensures Singapore's place in Group III, while Vietnam must now face a play-off against Sri Lanka, the likely fourth-placed team in Group B. Sri Lanka has only managed one win over against Cambodia and lost their other three ties.
The loser of the play-off will be relegated to Group IV, alongside Cambodia, which has already been confirmed as bottom of Group B.
