Parent-child bonding ceremony of the Ede

VOV.VN - The parent-child bonding rite is an age-old custom of the Ede ethnic minority in the Central Highlands that embodies the spirit of unity and fosters solidarity among different families and clans.

In the Ede tradition, family and clan ties are based not only on blood relations but formed also through adoptions between people of different clans and ethnic groups.

Ae Sen of Tong Ju hamlet, who has conducted many adoption rituals, says preparations must be thorough, and the ritual must be conducted solemnly.

“The father-child or mother-child adoption ritual of the Ede should be attended by relatives and elders who are knowledgeable about customs. They will explain and clarify the responsibilities of all parties to ensure that bond is lasting and firm,” says Sen.

Offerings for the ceremony depend on the family’s means and often include a small pig, a rooster, a jar of liquor, and two bronze bracelets as keepsakes for the parties. If the adoptee is facing hardship but sincerely wants to be adopted, the ceremony can simply be a gathering of relatives from both families to witness and share a toast of congratulations.

After Ae Sen, representing the clan, says, “The adoption ceremony has been carried out in the presence of both families”, the adoptee offered a cup of liquor to the adopter, and then offered cups to other relatives.

According to Ede custom, the adopter has the duty to teach, love, and care for the adoptee, while the adoptee must show respect and care for their adoptive parent.

“An adopted child should treat adoptive parents the same as biological parents, sharing the joys and sorrows of life. When the parents are ill, the children should visit and take care of them. Any family issues are confronted together, with shared responsibility. That’s why adoptions always take place in the presence of relatives, who witness the mutual commitments,” notes Ami H’uoc of Tong Ju hamlet.

According to Ae Sen, the master of ceremony plays a crucial role in the adoption ceremony. “If later, either party doesn’t want to maintain the bond or wants to dissolve the commitment, he or she must compensate the other’s honor. We, the ceremony masters, must clarify the penalties to both sides. The person who wants to break the relationship must give up a pig to treat the witnesses.”

Today the Ede adoption ceremony may take a simpler form, but it’s still a sacred pledge of affection, responsibility, and commitment between people.
