Noi Bai airport cuts flights amid heavy rain after typhoon Matmo

Cập nhật: 2 giờ trước

VOV.VN - Prolonged thunderstorms and torrential rain caused by Typhoon Matmo hit Noi Bai International Airport on the night of October 6 and the morning of October 7, thus reducing visibility to under 1 km, producing level‑7 wind gusts, and creating wind shear at take‑off and landing areas, disrupting flight operations.

Air traffic controllers implemented flow regulation measures as a way of reducing landing and take‑off capacity.

The Air Traffic Flow Management Centre (VATM) restricted the number of flights, adjusted priorities and reception rates to ensure safe operations under adverse weather conditions. Between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. on October 7, landing and take‑off capacity fell to about five flights per hour, compared with the normal 10-13 flights per hour.

According to VATM, 17 flights had to hold in the air and one was diverted due to weather conditions. As conditions improved, flights landed safely without further delays.

VATM emphasized that air traffic management during adverse weather followed established procedures, ensuring close coordination between air traffic control and meteorological units to maintain absolute safety, while minimizing disruption to airline schedules.

The agency will continue to closely monitor weather developments, update forecasts, and apply timely measures to ensure safe, efficient, and smooth flight operations.
