VOV.VN - The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) has confirmed that VAR technology will be used for the first time in the final of the 2025 ASEAN U23 Championship (Mandiri Cup™) between Vietnam and Indonesia, scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on July 29 at the 78,000-seat Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

According to the AFF, this move aims to ensure the highest refereeing standards and uphold fair play. The use of VAR is expected to improve the accuracy of key decisions and enhance transparency throughout the tournament.

This will also mark the first time VAR has been implemented in a match at the ASEAN U23 Championship, representing a step forward in the AFF’s efforts to improve tournament organization and management.

In the 2023 final, Vietnam beat Indonesia 6-5 in a penalty shootout to retain the title. Following that match, Indonesian head coach Shin Tae-yong strongly criticized the officiating and said the absence of VAR had disadvantaged his team.

Ahead of this year’s final, Vietnamese forward Nguyen Dinh Bac welcomed the use of VAR, saying it would ensure fairness for both sides. He added that the team would give their all to secure victory.

Vietnam are aiming to make history by becoming the first team to win three consecutive titles, following their victories in 2022 and 2023. Meanwhile, host nation Indonesia hope to avenge last year’s defeat and match Vietnam’s two-title record, having won the championship in 2019.
