The local strongman broke all three of his own youth world records in the men’s 55kg category on the second competition day on December 20.

He went on to secure first gold in the snatch after three attempts, managing 116kg to surpass the world record of 115kg held by himself.

In the clean and jerk, his attempt of 146kg gave him a sweep of gold. He scored his second record, also two kg better than the previous one.

In total, his combined weight of 262kg brought him his third gold and third record, bettering his own world record by four kg.

With three new records, the organisers gave him three more gold medals, raising the total number of gold medals won by him in the men’s 55kg category to six.

His teammate Do Tu Tung was second in the men’s 55kg category, taking three silver medals in the snatch at 115kg, the clean and jerk at 145kg, and 260kg in total. 

Also, in the same category, Huynh Van The brought home three bronze medals after lifting 108kg in the snatch, 131kg in the clean and jerk, and 239kg in total.

Two more gold medals went to weightlifter Y Lien in the women’s 49kg category.

So far, Vietnamese athletes have pocketed 11 gold, 10 silver, and five bronze medals.

The 2024 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in the Qatari capital of Doha has attracted 345 weightlifters worldwide, offering them a vital chance to display their skills and gain valuable international experience.

The tournament is scheduled to last through to December 26.
