VOV.VN - The temperature in the resort town of Sa Pa in the northern province of Lao Cai fell to five degrees Celsius on the evening of December 18, the lowest level since the beginning of winter.
According to information recorded by the hydro-meteorological station of Lao Cai province, as a strengthened cold spell hit the province on the night of December 18, the temperature in the province continued to drop.
There is little rain, with drizzle being accompanied by thick fog in Sa Pa.
At a height of 3,143 metres above sea level, the peak of Fansipan Mountain, the highest in Indochina, is widely regarded as the coldest place in the north during the winter period. Indeed, temperatures are forecast to plummet to as low as two degrees Celsius at night, thereby causing frost to occur.
The temperature on the Hoang Lien Son Mountain range is forecast to drop even lower on the night of December 21 as a strong cold air wave is expected to hit the northern region.
The natural phenomenon has been largely caused by the extreme cold spell which has spread throughout the northern region over recent days.
Local authorities have urged farmers to actively implement measures aimed at coping with the extreme cold to protect their crops and cattle.
