VOV.VN - The northern province of Quang Ninh is ramping up efforts to position itself as a leading regional and international tourism centre by 2030 by placing tourism at the forefront of its economic development strategy, according to industry insiders.
The locality will no longer rely solely on natural beauty and UNESCO-recognised heritage sites, but will instead actively diversify its tourism offerings with new, innovative products aimed at attracting a broader range of international visitors.
Since the beginning of the year, Quang Ninh has welcomed 38 international cruise ships carrying nearly 49,000 passengers, up 25% year on year. This impressive growth can be attributed to the province’s increasingly modern port infrastructure coupled with a steady renewal of tourism products tailored to evolving traveler demands.
Tran Nguyen, a representative of Sun Group, highlighted the private sector’s active role in tourism promotion.
“Businesses are not only collaborating on marketing efforts or hosting famtrips and media tours, we’re also constantly reinventing our offerings,” Nguyen said. “For example, the Yoko Onsen Quang Hanh resort is set to be managed by Hilton, a globally recognided brand. This partnership is a strategic move to strengthen Quang Ninh’s position as a premium, year-round destination on the international tourism map.”
Beyond cruise tourism, Quang Ninh is rapidly emerging as a promising destination for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism. With more international delegations opting for Southeast Asia, areas like Ha Long and Bai Chay are fast becoming go-to locations for combining business events with leisure.
Le Thi Bich Hang, director of Vietravel’s Quang Ninh branch, emphasised the need for strategic investment in community-based tourism and infrastructure for large groups.
“Many international travelers are eager to immerse themselves in local culture and traditions,” she noted. “However, there remains a shortage of facilities equipped to accommodate large groups of 2,000 to 3,000 guests.”
With a unique combination of land border crossings, seaports, and an international airport, Quang Ninh is strategically positioned to become a tourism gateway. The province is also home to UNESCO-recognised sites such as Ha Long Bay–Cat Ba Archipelago and the Complex of Yen Tu–Vinh Nghiem–Con Son–Kiep Bac, further enhancing its appeal.
Nguyen Trung Khanh, director of the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, expressed confidence in the province’s potential.
“Quang Ninh has all the ingredients for a tourism breakthrough thanks to natural resources, cultural heritage, modern infrastructure. The VNAT is committed to supporting the province in digital transformation, branding, and development of standout tourism products, especially in entertainment, wellness, and cultural sectors,” he noted.
In the first seven months of the year, Quang Ninh attracted 14.6 million visitors, exceeding its plan by 109%, with tourism revenues estimated at nearly VND37 trillion. Visitor growth was largely driven by strong demand from Northeast Asian markets, particularly China and India.
