VOV.VN - With just five weeks to go before the Lunar New Year festival, known locally as Tet, pottery workshops in Tan Phuoc Khanh ward of Tan Uyen city in the southern province of Binh Duong are working at full capacity to meet customer demand.
As Vietnamese people celebrate the Year of the Dragon in 2024, local artisans are making clay models depicting the large magical legendary creature.
Binh Duong's 200-year-old pottery-making craft has been officially recognised as an intangible part of national cultural heritage. Dozens of local households continue to maintain the age-old craft despite upheavals
A workshop is at its busiest ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, which falls on February 10 this year, with thousands of dragon-shaped items being churned out each day.
The majority of raw clay products are transported to other workshops in Binh Duong for painting and decoration.
Dragon-shaped pottery products prove to be the favourites of customers this year.
It is believed that unicorns, lions, and dragons symbolise happiness and prosperity, heralding good luck moving into the new year.
Some products are used as money boxes for children.
Clay products are fully decorated prior to their delivery. Craftsmen make use of powder paint because of its durability and fast drying capability, with all products being typically coated with a layer of gold glitter.
According to workshop owners, these products are mainly marketted in south and central Vietnam, along with Laos and Cambodia.
