In the sun-drenched, windy central region of Vietnam, the Cham community have developed a brilliant culture that adds to the diversity of Vietnam’s ethnic groups.

Traditional festivals such as a weather-praying ceremony and the Kate festival, held at the ancient Cham towers, to the sound of the Paranung drums and Saranai clarinets, are important religious and cultural events where people connect with deities, nature, and with one another.

The Duong Gian Sat ritual, a religious practice, has long been part of the life of the Cham people.

Held at Cham towers, this ritual symbolizes purification, cleansing, and the expulsion of evil as well as to pray for peace and bountiful harvests.

Paseh Man, a Cham dignitary, said: “The Duong Gian Sat ritual, held annually on the 15th day of the 4th month in the Cham calendar is a compulsory ceremony for our community. The offerings to the deities are chickens and goats. We pray for favorable weather, fertile land and abundant water for farming, and bumper harvests.”

Cham people gather at the festival to present offerings, perform ritual dances, and pray. The slow, graceful dance movements are performed to the sound of traditional instruments which create a solemn and intimate atmosphere.

The Kate Festival is the biggest celebration of the Cham. Held in early July in the Cham calendar, which is around September or October in the Gregorian calendar, Kate honors deities, kings, and ancestors.

During the festival, Cham towers such as Po Klong Garai and Po Rome are beautifully decorated. Participants, dressed in traditional attire, join the rituals. Women wear dazzling dresses and men are in white turbans.

Chief monk Bong Tu said “This is a grand ceremony that we hold every year. The ritual is performed by five officiants. The Bong officiant is the main dancer, who is accompanied by an offering officiant. There are two drummers and a Saranai instrumentalist.”

The main offerings placed inside the towers include a goat, three chickens for purification rites, five trays of rice with goat meat and soup, one tray of rice with sesame salt, three rice cakes, and fruit. The villagers also bring additional offerings such as rice liquor, eggs, sweet sticky rice, betel, and areca. Outside of the towers worshipers prepare hundreds of offering trays.

Huynh Co, a Cham man in Khanh Hoa, revealed that “Cham people need to know about the Kate ceremony, it’s is a beautiful cultural tradition that should be widely promoted.”

After the rituals at the Cham towers, festivities take place in all villages with diverse folk performances and sport games. Cham girls in traditional dresses sing folk songs to the sound of the Paranưng drums and Saranai clarinets.

Experiencing the Kate Festival for the first time, Le Kieu Thuy said “The Kate festival is very impressive. I admired the ancient Cham towers, and immersed myself in the sacred atmosphere. It was an unforgettable experience.”

In Vietnam’s cultural mosaic, Cham festivals are precious gems that enrich the diversification of 54 ethnic groups. They are the pride of the Cham people and a valuable part of Vietnam’s heritage.
