Gridlocked traffic in Hanoi ahead of Lunar New Year holiday
Cập nhật: 2 giờ trước
VOV.VN - As the Lunar New Year holiday (Tet) is drawing near, residents in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, are struggling with congested roads and increased traffic pressure, making daily commutes more challenging.
Key thoroughfares across the city, including Nguyen Trai, Pham Van Dong, and Giai Phong streets, are crowded with road users, especially car and motorbike drivers.
The sheer volume of vehicles, combined with a surge in shopping and travel activities typical of the pre-Tet period, exacerbates the situation.
Motorbikes, cars, and even bicycles jostle for space, with pedestrians often spilling onto the roads due to overcrowded pavements.
Thousands of commuters take to the street especially during peak hours, resulting in slow-moving traffic and extended travel time.
Despite the severe traffic jams, Hanoi's streets no longer see motorbike riders mounting pavements, thanks to the enforcement of the Government’s Decree 168 that imposes heavy fines on traffic law breakers
On Thai Ha Street, during peak hours, long lines of vehicles and pedestrians move at a slow pace. The congestion is compounded by traffic lights at intersections, which create bottlenecks as streams of vehicles struggle to pass through.
While some riders abide by the rules, others disregard the high penalties and still take to the pavements in their quest to bypass the gridlock.
Traffic police say during the year-end period, residents are not only commuting for work but also using their lunch breaks and evenings to complete Tet preparations.
They say forces are actively deployed at key intersections and congested areas to regulate traffic flow.
However, with the overwhelming number of vehicles and the festive rush, their efforts provide only temporary relief.
