VOV.VN - Every five years, Dam Village in Tay Tuu Ward, Bac Tu Liem District, Hanoi, hosts a traditional boat racing festival, recognized as part of the national intangible cultural heritage that draws a large number of participants.
The boat racing competition is held from the ninth to the 11th day of the third lunar month in Tay Tuu ward, Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi. This year's event running from April 6 to 8 features a variety of cultural activities.
Dragon dances put on by local artists kick off the festival.
The cờ người (human chess) competition and many folk games are organised as part of the festival.
The event is held to commemorate the tutelary god Bach Hac Tam Giang. Before taking part in the competition, rowers offer incense at the communal house.
The race on Pheo River attracts the participation of hundreds of rowers in six boats.
Competitors receive great encouragement from both locals and tourists.
All participants are selected from the three hamlets of Thuong, Trung, and Ha.
In 2018 the Dam boat racing festival is recognised as part of national intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The occasion highlights the solidarity among Vietnamese people.
