VOV.VN - On the morning of the 29th day of the Lunar calendar, many traditional markets in Hanoi are still bustling with vendors, though this year the number of buyers is relatively sparse.
With only several hours left until the Lunar New Year of the Snake begins, the atmosphere at Mai Dich market is unusually gloomy.
Although the goods on sale are still very diverse, ranging from fruits, banh chung (square glutinous rice cake), fresh flowers, to ornamental plants, they still do not attract the expected number of customers.
Traders at the market explain that there are fewer buyers today as perhaps they have already done their shopping for Tet.
Many vendors come to the market from early in the morning, but by noon there are still no customers.
Traders worry because they are still left with a large inventory.
Fresh flowers are probably the best-selling item.
Gladioli flowers cost from VND120,000 to VND150,000 per dozen, while Lisianthus is about VND100,000 per bunch.
Meanwhile, banana prices this year see a sharp increase compared to last year due to the impact of Yagi super typhoon. A bunch of green bananas for Tet costs from VND60,000 to VND80,000.
Nguyen Thi Oanh, a chicken seller based at Mai Dich market, says that since this morning, she has only sold a few dozen chickens. This year, the price of chicken is VND190,000 per kg.
Fresh pork counters also suffer from the same situation.
Although prices have dropped sharply, the ornamental plant market fails to attract customers.
Many people like to buy old coriander leaves to bathe on the 29th of Tet.
Thanks to that scent, people feel clean and pure to welcome in the Spring. That is why Vietnamese people have continued with the custom of bathing in coriander leaves since ancient times.
