VOV.VN - Located on the outskirts of Hanoi, the 300-year-old conical hat market of Chuong village, Thanh Oai district, attracts plenty of people keen to explore the ways of making hats and seek special souvenirs as gifts.
According to the elders of Chuong village, the hat making profession has a history of more than 300 years, although no one knows where it actually originated from.
Chuong village is famous throughout the country for the traditional production of Non La (conical hat).
The market is located on banks of the Day river, right in front of the ancient village communal house.
On the fourth, 10th, 14th, 20th, 24th and 30th of each month, the local hat market becomes more bustling and crowded as buyers and sellers gather to trade right in the middle of the village’s communal house.
Each market session only lasts for about two hours.
It’s easily found that street vendors carry 10 to 20 pieces of hat on their heads or shoulders, walking around the market looking for buyers.
The market starts bustling at 5 a.m. in front of the communal house yard, and most of the customers are the elderly.
The market sells conical hats with many different designs.
The area selling materials and tools for making conical hats is filled with a vibrant array of colours.
Conical hats cost around VND20,000 to VND70,000 each.
Many people take a trip to the market to buy hats as souvenir gifts.
