VOV.VN - Situated on the southern bank of the Huong (Perfume) River, Thanh Tien village in Hue city, central Vietnam, is famous for making paper flowers which adds colour to the village as the Lunar New Year 2025 festival (Tet) is drawing near.
Various kinds of paper flowers in different shades have made the entire village a kaleidoscope of colour in recent days, just one week left until Tet.
Local villagers make paper flowers as offerings to their ancestors. Nowadays, their products have become decorative items, particularly during the Tet holiday, the country’s biggest festival in a year.
In Thanh Tien village, the craftsmanship has been handed down from one generation to another for more than 300 years.
Flowers are made from environmentally friendly materials such as bamboo. Bamboo branches are split into small sticks and dried, while petals and stamens are dyed carefully to keep the colour vibrant for a long time.
Making paper lotus flowers requires the most intricate skills, and only several households are capable of producing sophisticated products.
The products are put on display during the Hue festival, Ao Dai festival, and numerous cultural events.
According to local artisans, the art of making paper flowers stems from the local worship ritual. Due to the unfavourable weather in the central region, fresh flowers can’t be kept for a long time, so local residents create paper flowers instead.
Paper flowers can meet worshipping and decoration demands during Tet and other festivals.
The village is also a must-visit destination for domestic and foreign tourists alike during their trip to Hue.
